Importance of vitamin A.
Generates light sensitive pigment in the retina. (Good vision)
Normal growth.
Healthy nerve function.
Prevents; skin problems, unhealthy hair, port vision, and night blindness.
Deficiency in vitamin A.
Night blindness, xerophthalmia, and keratomalacia.
Importance of vitamin D.
Increases calcium and phosphate absorption.
Deficiency in vitamin D.
Osteoporosis in adults.
Rickets in children.
Characterised by; softening of developing bone, bow leg, malnutrition, and enlargement of liver and spleen.
Importance of vitamin B1.
Needed for aerobic respiration.
Deficiency in vitamin B1.
Beri beri. May affect systems of the body including skin, muscle, heart, nerves, and digestive system.
Importance of vitamin C.
Repairs wounds.
Deficiency in vitamin C.
Scurvy.
Importance of calcium.
Component of bone and teeth.
Deficiency in calcium.
Osteomalacia, hypocalcemia, infantile rickets, and adult osteomalacia.
Importance of iron.
Formation of haemoglobin.
Deficiency in haemoglobin.
Anaemia.
Importance of fats and lipids ( eg. Cholesterol).

What is fibre?
A non-starch polysaccharide (NSP).
It’s not a nutrient.
It cannot be digested.
It’s not needed for energy.
Two types of protein related malnutrition.
Marasmus and kwashiorkor.
Symptoms of marasmus.
-thin
-loss of muscle bulk
-No subcutaneous fat
-loose skin folds
-floppy buttocks
-miserable and restless
-apathy and lethargy
Symptoms of kwashiorkor.
-oedema
-loss of lushly and fat masked by oedema
-anorexia
-abdominal distension
-hair losing colour
-irritable and miserable
-skin cracks, fragile, and prone to infection
-acutly sick
What are the macronutrients?
Carbs, fats, and proteins.
What are the micronutrients?
Minerals, vitamins, and fatty acids.
Importance of vitamin K.
Helps blood clotting.
Deficiency in vitamin K.
Easy bruising and nosebleeds.
