Title of LS-Q1
Fungicidal Activity of Pansit-Pansitan (Peperomia pellucida) against Phytopathogenic Fungi Java Black Rot (Lasiodiplodia theobromae) from Selected Mango Orchard in Zambales, Philippines.
DEPENDENT VARIABLE?
Growth of Java Black Rot (Lasiodiplodia theobromae)
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE?
Fungicidal Activity of Pansit-Pansitan (Peperomia pellucida) Extract
What are the 5 setups of this study?
2.1. Experimental Setup 2.1.1. 1/5 g/mL (40g extract to 200mL ethanol); 2.1.2. 1/10 g/mL (20g extract to 200mL ethanol); 2.1.3. 1/12 g/mL (17g extract to 200mL ethanol); or 2.2. Control Setup 2.2.1. Mancozeb concentration; or 2.2.2. 0g extract.
What are the hypotheses?
Null Hypothesis: The Pansit-Pansitan (Peperomia pellucida) leaf extract does not show a significant effect on the fungal growth of Java Black Rot (Lasiodiplodia theobromae). Alternative Hypothesis: The Pansit-Pansitan (Peperomia pellucida) leaf extract shows a significant effect on the fungal growth of Java Black Rot (Lasiodiplodia theobromae).
What is the edge of the pansit-pansitan extract among other fungicides in the market (e.g. Mancozeb)?
The pansit-pansitan extract would be a natural biofungicide which is a sustainable alternative that lessens toxic waste. Additionally, it is less harmful as most commercial fungicides including Mancozeb are carcinogenic (cancer-causing), according to a study by Belpoggi et al.
Where will you get pansit-pansitan?
Pasay Public Market at Antonio Arnaiz Avenue, corner Taft Avenue, Pasay City, 1300 Metro Manila
Where will you get the fungi?
Rosa Farms in Km. 156 National Highway, Barangay Luna, San Marcelino - San Antonio Boundary, Zambales, Philippines
Why not get fungi cultures directly instead of getting samples from the mango?
Our group was encouraged to conduct our study in a more narrow context and collect our samples from a specific orchard through purposive sampling method. Hence, we will collect the fungi from the mangoes and have it authenticated through PNCM. However, we have a backup plan of obtaining stock culture from the Mycology Department of the Polytechnic university of the Philippines (PUP).
What are Phytopathogenic fungi?
microorganisms that generate toxins that may be crucial in the emergence of plant diseases and harm the host plants
Why use pansit-pansitan?
P. pellucida is a good source of phytochemicals, particularly alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, saponins, and phenols, which are accountable for the versatile medicinal effects of the plant. Phytochemical screening of P. pellucida leaves revealed that their concentration was ranked from highest to lowest: alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, tannins, and phenols (Ibe-diala & Igwe, 2022). In particular, saponins, flavonoids, and tannins are the ones that are involved in fungicidal activity. Pansit-pansitan is also abundant in the Philippines, but is not a staple product despite being edible, hence it is a good candidate for creating biofungicides.
