What is a gastropod and what are they also known as?
A mollusk with a single shell and single muscle — also known as a univalve
What is a mollusk?
An invertebrate animal with a soft body covered by a shell of one or more pieces
What are the three classes of mollusks?
Univalves (gastropods), bivalves and cephalopods
What are the three most common edible univalves/gastropods?
Abalone, conch, escargot
What is an Abernethy biscuit?
A firm biscuit that is similar to hardtack with added sugar and caraway seeds, created by Scottish doctor John Abernethy in the 18th century as a digestive aid
What is hardtack?
A large, hard biscuit made with unsalted, unleavened dough that is dried to lengthen shelf life — used since the 1800s as a staple for long sailing voyages
What is acaçá?
A Brazilian porridge of coconut milk and rice flour that’s steamed in banana leaves or cooked in a pot/pan, then cooled and cut into slices or cubes. It is typically served with sauces and stews.
