Acute Bronchitis
Inflammation of the large bronchioes
AKA chest cold
Most commonly viral (corona, rhino, RSV, adeno)
Bacterial (strep)
How long does the cough usually last in acute bronchitis?
typically 2 weeks after infection subsides due to inflammation and repair
Acute bronchitis presentation
Usually starts 3-4 days after URI Fever Cough - nonproductive, then productive Malaise Hoarseness, wheezing
Acute bronchitis mgmt
Fluids Hand washing Consider saline neb, or albuterol if wheezing NSAIDS for fever, aches Sudafed, Mucinex Cough suppressant (guaifinasen) Consider antihistamines
Acute BronchIOLitis
Lower RTI that occurs in kids under 2 yrs old
Usually viral infxn that affects small airways
Wheezing, lowered O2 sats
Leading cause of hospitalization in infants and children
Most common virus causing BronchIOLitis?
RSV** Parainfluenza Influenza Rhinovirus Coronavirus
Peak incidence of bronchiolitis (age)
2-6 months
Can have it up to 5 yrs
Accounts for 60% of all lower RTI in first year of life
Bronchiolitis presentation
Nasal congestion/rhinorrhea Mild cough Low grade fever Progresses to.... Tachypnea, chest retractions, wheezing
