Risk factors for threatened miscarriage:
Kidney qi xu Spleen Qi sinking Blood Xu Blood heat Blood stasis
How often should you treat for threatened miscarriage?
Weekly.
Kidney Qi Xu Symptoms:
Spotting Low back pain, ache or soreness Sore legs Fatigue Frequent urination Low progesterone levels / history of insufficient luteal phase
Kidney Qi Xu T and P:
T pale, P weak & soft. Kidney pulse should quickly become firm, solid & slightly slippery in a healthy pregnancy
Kidney Qi Xu Treatment points:
DU20 & R6 tonify & raise qi
KD3, 7, 9 tonify kidney qi. Can use BLD23 also but with
caution as moving blood and qi in lower jiao must be
done with caution
DU4 warms and firms mingmen
Spleen Qi Sinking Symptoms:
Abdominal distension & heaviness Bearing down or sagging sensation Spotting Fatigue Nausea worse for exertion Cervix may be slightly open, upon examination
Spleen Qi Xu treatment and points:
DU20 & R6 lift qi
STM36, SP3, BLD20 to nourish spleen to raise qi
KD3, KD9 to nourish kidney. BLD23 with caution,
shallow needling
What can compromise blood production?
Spleen Qi Xu
What two factors can be involved in a too-small fetus?
Spleen and Kidney Yang xu (nutrients are insufficient to nourish growth).
Blood Xu Symptoms:
scanty, watery bleeding Fatigue Palpitations Small fetus for dates Anaemia Pale complexion
Blood Xu treatment and points:
R12 STM36, BLD20 tonify qi & blood LV8, BLD17, 18 nourishes liver blood HT7, HT3 nourish heart blood SP3, SP8 nourish spleen KD5, KD3 harmonise qi & blood in Chong & ren Blood tonic foods
Blood Heat Symptoms:
Bright red, profuse bleeding Sudden onset Accompanied with febrile symptoms if due to infection Anxiety is a big trigger - cause heat in the heart which disturbs the uterus via Bao Mai vessel Extreme anger = liver fire Restless & agitated Thirst Dark urine Constipation
What is low dose paracetemol good for?
Reduces fever quickly and clears heat without compromising uterine warmth
Blood heat treatment and points:
SP10, LI11, BLD17, P3 cool blood even technique SP1 stops bleeding LV2 cools liver blood KD2 nourishes yin HT5, 8 clears heart fire and blood heat KD8 clears heat & stops bleeding P6 calms shen
Blood stasis symptoms:
Sharp, stabbing or cramping abdominal pain
Dark bleeding with clots
Blood stasis possible causes:
IVF procedures cause stasis, and should be addressed after embryo transfer so not to interfere with implantation
Fibroids, endometrosis
Physical traumas - terminations, previous miscarriages, traumatic births
Blood (excessively) clotting disorders ie: antiphospholipid syndrome
Blood stasis T and P:
T: Purple
P: Choppy
Why is treating Blood stasis tricky?
Need to move blood without disturbing fetus.
Blood stasis treatment and points:
Advisable to strongly nourish kidney and lift qi to
protect fetus while carefully moving blood.
P6, SP10 to move blood, clear stasis and relieve pain.
STM29 with significant caution, shallow needling and no manipulation
DU20, R12 to lift qi to secure fetus
How often do you treat inevitable miscarriage (expelling products)?
Every 3 days
Inevitable miscarriage treatment and points:
KD14, 18 move blood and qi Chong vessel
STM28, STM29 regulate blood in uterus
SP12, SP13 regulate qi & blood in abdomen
SP4, R4, GB21, LV3 stimulate downward and clearing
action
What is important post miscarriage?

Recovering Qi and blood
Strengthening Kidney, Spleen, and Heart yang.
Points and treatment for post miscarriage:
SP10, LV1, R6, SP8 can regulate blood & qi to stop
excessive bleeding
STM36, SP3, SP6, LV13, R12, BLD20, R6, KD3, KD6 +
