por si or por si acaso - they are interchangeable
They introduce a subordinate clause expressing a condition. They can be followed by the subjunctive or the indicative.
if subj - less probable
if indic - more probable
I am taking the umbrella in case it rains. (probable)
Me voy a llevar el paraguas por si acaso llueve.
I am taking the umbrella in case it rains (less probability)
Me voy a llevar el paraguas por si lloviera.
lloviera - imperfect subjunctive
