Tonic Phase
Body stiffens for no more than 30 seconds and breathing may stop. Bowel and urinary functions may fail.
Clonic Phase
Violent jerking lasting 1 or 2 minutes. May drool, froth at the mouth, and bite tongue. Face and lips may become cyanotic.
Postictal Phase
Begins when convulsions stop. May wake up to a phase of confusion and drowsiness or remain unconscious for several hours. Headache is common.
Aura
Indication seizure patient has prior to episode. May begin with a sound, smell, or just a feeling.
Types of seizures
Partial - affects only 1 side of brain
Generalized - affects both sides of the brain
Tonic-Clonic - Patient looses consciousness and has jerking movements of paired muscle groups
Causes of seizure
Hypoxia Stroke Traumatic Brain Injury Toxins Hypoglycemia Brain Tumor Congenital Brain Disorder Infection Metabolic (body chemistry) Idiopathic (unknown cause)
Status Elepticus
Two consecutive seizures with no return to consciousness in between. High priority. Consider ALS intercept.
Transient Ischemic Attack
Symptoms disappear within 24 hours. Usually prone to full blown stroke.
Syncope
Fainting
Diabetes Ketoacidosis
Due to high blood sugar (Hyperglycemic) characterized by dehydration, shock, and altered mental status
Epilepsy
Medical condition causing seizures
