Cardio Flashcards
ACS
Acute coronary syndrome (AKA coronary compromise)
Symptoms related to ischemia in the heart muscle
AMI
Acute myocardial infarction
Portion of the myocardium dies as a result of ischemia
Agonal breaths
Irregular gasping breaths that proceed apnea and death
Aneurysm
Dilation or ballooning of a weakened artery wall
Angina Pectoris
When blood supply to the heart is reduced and a portion of the heart muscle is not receiving enough O2
Apnea
No breathing
Asystole
Heart stops generating electrical impulses (flat line)
Bradycardia
Heart rate (pulse) reduced below 60
Cardiac compromise
ACS
CHF
Congestive Heart Failure
Failure of heart to pump blood effectively, causing buildup of body fluids in lungs, body, or both.
Coronary Artery Disease
Diseases that affect the arteries of the heart
Dyspnea
Shortness of breath, labored or difficulty breathing
Disrythmea
Disturbance in heart rate and rhythm
Edema
Build up of fluids
Embolism
Blockage of a blood vessel by a clot of foreign matter
Nitroglycerin
Medication that dilates the blood vessels
Occlusion
Blockage of an artery by a fatty deposit
Pedal edema
Fluid build-up in the feet, ankles, calves
Pulmonary edema
Build-up of fluid in the lungs
PEA
Pulseless Electrical Activity
Electrical activity remains relatively normal but heart fails to pump creating cardiac arrest
Sudden Death
Cardiac arrest that occurs within 2 hours of symptom onset
Tachycardia
Heart rate (pulse greater than 100)
Thrombus
Clot formed of blood and plaque on the artery or vein wall
VFib
Ventricular Fibulation
Disorganized impulses
Vtach
Ventricular Tachycardia
Rapid heart rate
Ischemia
Lack of O2
