Misc Flashcards
Respiratory rate
Newborn: 33–45
One-year-old: 25–35
10: 15–20
Adult: 12–20
Inspiration: expiration
Normal 1:2
COPD 1:3
Increased blood pressure
Vasodilation, decreased cardiac output and heart rate
Postural tachycardia syndrome
Heart rate increases 30 or more within 10 minutes of standing
Bruit
Random sound/murmur, blowing sound, carotid or femoral artery
Indicative of Atherosclerosis
Gallup rhythm
Three sounds per cycle – possible CHF, CAD, MI
Hypovolemia
Decreased blood volume and plasma
Causes: bleeding, dehydration, severe burns
Symptoms: orthostatic hypotension, tachycardia, increased body temperature
Hypervolemia
Fluid overload, increased plasma
Causes: excessive fluid intake, sodium or fluid retention
Symptoms: swelling, fluid in lungs
Plasma
Liquid component of blood – H2O, electrolytes, protein
Red blood cells
Erythrocytes, hemoglobin + oxygen
Anemia
Low red blood cells, so decreased oxygen, hemoglobin
Symptoms: pale, cyanosis, weakness, headache, vertigo. General fatigue more than muscle weakness
Platelets
Thrombocytes, assist in clotting
Decreased: thrombocytopenia
Increased: thrombocythemia
Hematocrit
Percentage of red blood cells
35–48%
Hemoglobin
Molecule in red blood cells, binds with oxygen contains iron
12 – 16 g/dL
> 8: no exercise
8-10: low exercise
Ventilation/perfusion ratio
0.8 – normal
Less: physiologic shunt – ventilation decreased
More: ventilation unchanged, blood flow/perfusion decreased. Pulmonary embolus
