This is where we need to have our sequencing for CYYZ completed and back on course

what does the red in each strip signify?
- Red W, possible conflict
- Red Square: wrong way altitude
- Red plus is a medevac
What does the green square mean?
New information available
What does the orange mean on each strip?
- Action required
- New SSR code requiring assignment
- Cleared altitude does not match coordinated OUT altitude
- CYYZ meter time. It being blue on the right box indicates in a shared field that this time has been passed to the aircraft
What does purple highlights mean?
Purple means “Controller Entered Field”’ and is shared internally for speed. When speed assignment is done using EXCDS-FDE it will appear in purple. This information will transfer down the line within the center but will not be passed to external sectors/units.
These will not pass to montreal because they are entered through EFS. montreal will see the blue stuff. This is why montreal will generally coordinate speeds with us by entering them through caats, not efs
What do blue highlights mean?
And list the fields
Blue means Shared Information. The information highlighted in blue indicates that it is shared to all sectors that will hold an FDE for the aircraft. It will populate/unpopulated on all FDEs in real time. “Shareable” information on the FDE is in Box 12 (usually holding clearance), Box 13 (EFC time) and/or Box 3B (speed assignment executed through CAATS).
Montreal Centre will see this information
What do yellow highlights mean?
Yellow indicates “Special information” (NON-RVSM, SUPER, odd destination). NEGRVSM and SUPER will appear in Box 16, in yellow. Only one indicator can display at a time, therefore, if both indicators apply, highlight priority will be given to NEGRVSM.
The destination highlight can be toggled on/off by clicking on Box 6B. This highlight is used primarily on personal preference but helpful to use as a reminder of flight that arrive at an underlying airport and require descent as per procedure. Some examples include arrivals to CYYB, CYQA, and CYTR.
Three ways to remove a strip
- CJS handed off
- Remove FDE
- Select the FDE menu and select “suppress strip”
Impact of changes to altitude information
- Cleared
- Flight Planned
- Coordinated In
- Coordinated Out
-cleared – shared field, must always be updated
- Flight planned - can only be changed in CAATS
- Coordianted In - not shared, individual FDE only
- Coordinated out - not shared, individual FDE only
EXCDS-EFS and CAATS, INFORMATION FLOW
What information goes both ways?
Cleared Altitude
EXCDS-EFS and CAATS, INFORMATION FLOW
What information does not flow from CAATS to EXCDS-EFS?
- Controller Remarks
- ED Altitude
- Holding Information including time
The four ways to change the cleared altitude are:
- Click the Altitude Dialogue Box on the EXCDS FDE directly
- On the CAATS data tag, click on the mode C or, if displayed, the cleared altitude to open. Select the altitude from the slider or type from the keyboard, be sure that the cleared altitude box is selected on the dropdown.
- Cycle through the data tags on your CJS by using the F5 key on the CAATS keyboard, similar to the handoff key. When “CLR” appears under the appropriate PPS, enter the altitude using the CAATS keyboard.
- Open the flight plan panel and enter the altitude in the Cleared box using the CAATS keyboard.
Assigned Speeds - Two ways to enter
Assigning speeds in EXCDS-EFS
On the FDE, click on Box 3B to access the Speed Dialogue Box. The “click-toclose”
quick action buttons will automatically populate the selected speed
and simultaneously close the dialogue box. To use the “+” or “-” , select one
prior the using the quick action button.
The ellipses button opens the assigned speed keypad.
The “RESUME” button will remove the assigned speed from the FDE and
simultaneously close the Speed Dialogue Box
Assigning Speeds in CAATS
To access the speed slider, B3 click on the ground speed of the data tag, or, if present, on assigned speed. Select the “A” to indicate assigned speed. To change between Indicated speed and Mach number, toggle on the ‘Mach’ button. Select the “+” or “-”, as required.
When an assigned speed is entered in CAATS, a RESUME button will display at the top of the altitude slider to cancel and resume normal speed. If entered using CAATS, the assigned speed will be removed from the data tag and the FDE.
- Resuming speed on the FDE, will NOT update CAATS and only clears the assigned speed on the FDE.
Entering a speed in CAATS using the CAATS keyboard, will populate a filed speed only, not an assigned speed even if the “A” is selected.
To use the enter an assigned speed using the CAATS keyboard, follow the steps listed below:
* Open the speed slider
* Type “A”
* CAATS will automatically populate a period, therefore,
o enter two digits, for a MACH speed
o backspace to remove the period, for an indicated speed and enter 3 digits
blue speeds vs purple speeds
blue speeds entered in CAATS. they are shared, montreal will see these on their FDE
Purple speeds entered in EXCDS-EFS, they are not shared and will not show to external sectors/units
NOTE: if there is a discrepancy between CAATS speeds and the EFS Speed, the speed in purple will be what the aircraft has because if the last speed was assigned in CAATS it would have overwritten the EFS speed etc. So a puple speed will always be the last speed assigned to the aircraft
