Misadventures Flashcards
What causes Transportation & Leding?
- Too stiff a file
- Too large a file
- Failure to recognize curvatures
- Failure to establish correct WL
- Failure to maintain correct WL
- Failure to recapitulate
What is happening in this picture?
Strip Perforation
What is going on in this picture?
What is the Prognosis of a Perforation related to?
- Relationsip to gingival sulcus
- Size
- Time between perforation and repair
*Immediate Repair Is Best
What are 2 materials you can use to repair a perforation?
MTA/Geristore
What three qualities make for a Good Perforation Prognosis?
Good
- Fresh
- Small
- Apical/Coronal
What 3 qualities make up a Poor Prognosis for a Perforation?
Poor
- Old
- Large
- Sulcular/Crestal
What should you do if you seperate a file?
- Attempt to remove or bypass
- May incorporate into obturation
- May not affect prognosis
- Advise patient…recall
What is Torsional Fatigue?
“Instrument tip locks or drags in canal while shaft continues to rotate, thereby exerting enough force to fracture the tip”
What are some warning signs of Torsional Fatigue?
- Too much apical force
- Clicking sounds
- Unwinding
What is Cyclic Fatigue?
- Cyclic loading leads to failure
- Bending/breaking a metal coat hanger
- One rotation within curved canal = one tension-compression stress cycle
- “Flexural fracture”
What are warning signs of Cyclic Fatigue?
- None
- No defects prior to separation
What are some signs/symptoms of an NaOCl Extrusion?
- Immediate, extreme pain
- Swelling…hematoma
- Potential for tissue necrosis
How do you manage a NaOCl Extrusion?
- Calm patient
- Augment anesthesia
- Cold compress X 6 hours
- Warm compress X 2 days
- Analgesics & Antibiotics
- Immediate referral if airway compromise
- Daily recall
