Strategic apex
Senior level management
charged with ensuring that the organisation serves its mission in an effective way. Top management make the strategic decisions for the organisation and feed this down to the middle line of managers.
Middle line
Middle managers delegate decisions from strategic apex down the chain of command to the operating core
Operating core
The workers; those that perform the basic work related directly to the production of products and services
Support staff
Providing indirect services to the rest of the organisation
Technostructure
The analysts who design systems concerned with the formal planning and control of the work
Simple structure
Simple, not much more than one large unit consisting of one or a few top managers and a group of operators who do the basic work –> the classic entrepreneurial company
Machine bureaucracy
Emphasis on the standardization of work; low skilled, highly specialized jobs –> mass production organisations
Professional bureaucracy
Firms where each job is different and professional expertise is required –> lawyer and accountancy firms
Divisional form
A central headquarters supports a number of independent divisions –> large corporations who have different business units and product lines
Innovative/adhocracy
Organisations hire and give power to experts –> new industries of companies that want to become innovative leaders
