Minimally Invasive Dentistry - Caries Classifications - IDCAS Flashcards
What does IDCAS detect?
Visually ranks a scoring system which measures the depth of the lesion penetration and includes non cavitation states of caries
What probe do you use for IDCAS?
Ball-point probe not the explorer
How are lesions scored?
0-6
What are the 4 terms used to describe the caries?
0 = sound
1 + 2 = early stage decay
3 + 4 = established decay
5 + 6 = severe decay
What does D1-D4 measure?
Extent of the lesion by size
Use radiographs
Classify the tooth shown; black’s, anatomical location, type of caries, ICDAS, active or arrested?
Class 1
Carries affecting pits and fissures
Primary caries
ICDAS 2/3/4
top lesion is arrested, bottom lesion is active
What lesions is active and what is arrested?
1 arrested
2 active
Is a radiograph useful for Black’s class 1?
No, clean it and go from there
What black’s classification is shown?
Class II
caries affecting the interproximal surfaces of posterior teeth
Why are class II cavities common? (BLACK’S)
A proximal surfaces are stagnation areas… plaque can form from and mature often undisturbed
How do you usually access a class II cavity?
Accessed through marginal ridge
What do you have to be careful of with class II caries restoration?
Careful caries removal and prep to prevent iatrogenic damage to adjacent tooth
When restoring a class II cavity, what is needed to go around the tooth?
Matrix band
When restoring a class III lesion, how would you access it?
From palatal or lingual
When are class IV common?
Trauma, chipped tooth
Patients with large oversets
