MINERLAS & ROCKS INTRODUCTION Flashcards
4 major environments of earth’s system
- hydrosphere(water on planet. a planet’s hydrosphere can be liquid, vapor, or ice.)
- atmosphere(air)
- geosphere(sold earth)
- biosphere(global ecosystem composed of living organisms (biota) and the abiotic (nonliving))
mineral def
Naturally occurring homogeneous solid, inorganically formed, with a definite chemical comp and ordered atomic arrangement
e.g sodium chloride, rock salt
rock def
in general aggregates of minerals
some rocks are made up of 1 rock type, e.g limestone made of calcite
some consist of glass, e.g obsidian
aggregate def
component of composite materials such as concrete
3 major rock types
igneous
sedimentary
metamorphic
igneous formation
rocks crystallised from molten material (magma), e.g granite
sedimentary formation
by weathering of pre-existing clasts at earth’s surface and cemented together through water pressure over time
form in places where material is moved around and deposited, like rivers, deserts, lakes and oceans.
metamorphic formation
by alteration and solid-state recrystallisation of pre-existing ig/sed/met rocks due to heat/pressure at depth within earth
NOT MELTING
use of mineral
Glass is made of quartz – silicon dioxide
But, like a lot of modern iPhones, glass been strengthened. Do that, add a few things. One of them is aluminium oxide. Comes from bauxite
