IGNEOUS ROCK Flashcards
igneous rock
rock type formed from magma or lava which cooled n crystallised into solid rock
two types of igneous rock
intrusive/extrusive
intrusive igneous rock
magma of any composition which cooled slowly beneath surface forming igneous rock with a texture of large minerals
extrusive igneous rock
erupted lava of any composition that cooled quickly to form igneous rock with a texture of small minerals
extrusive igneous rock examples
basalt
andesite
dacite
rhyolite
what is basalt
fine-grained, dark-colored extrusive igneous composed of plagioclase/pyroxene/olivine
what is andesite
fine-grained, extrusive igneous composed of plagioclase/hornblende/pyroxene/(sometimes biotite)
what is dacite
fine-grained, light-coloured, extrusive igneous composed of quartz/plagioclase/hornblende/(sometimes biotite)
what is rhyolite
fine-grained, light-colored, extrusive igneous rock composed of quartz/alkali feldspar
what is gabbro
coarse-grained, dark-colored, intrusive igneous composed of plagioclase feldspar/pyroxene/(sometimes olivine)
what is granite
coarse-grained, light-colored, intrusive igneous composed of quartz/plagioclase n alkali feldspar/mica
what is peridotite
coarse-grained intrusive igneous composed almost entirely of olivine. Contain small amounts amphibole/feldspar/quartz/pyroxene
intrusive igneous rock examples
gabbro
granite
peridotite
