- To defend the town and improve the amenity value
- Work began in 1997 and cost £12.3m

What were the main features of the scheme?
A
- A 0.6m high sea wall with a curved front to deflect the waves
- Rock Armour at the base of the wall to dissipate some of the wave energy
- Beach nourishment to build up the beach by 2m in height

Why did beach nourishment take place?
A
- As it forced the waves to break further out to sea which then provides an excellent sandy beach for tourists

Has the scheme been successful?
A
- Yes, as it has protected the town from storms and high tides and also enhanced the seafront by creating an attractive beach environment
