Holderness Coastline - Case Study Flashcards
1
Q
What is our case study for this?
A
- Holderness coastline
2
Q
How is Coastal Erosion affecting the holderness coastline?
A
- By the soft boulder cliffs which are eroding at a rate of 3-30 feet per year.
- Over a long period of time 30 villages have disappeared into the sea
- 30 houses, which were previously parallel to the clifftop, have all disappeared
3
Q
Describe Flamborough Head
A
- It is the headland that forms the most northerly point of the Holderness Coastline
- White Chalk Cliffs surround it which lie in distinct horizontal layers
4
Q
What is our case study for Coastal Management?
A
- Mappleton, which has been subject to intense erosion at a rate of 2.0m per year
- This has resulted in the access road being only 50m from the cliff edge at its closest point
5
Q
What Coastal Management has taken place?
A
- In 1991, almost £2 million was spent on two rock groynes and a rock revetment to protect Mappleton
- Blocks of granite were imported from Norway for the sea defences
6
Q
Have the Coastal Management strategies been succesful?
A
- The two rock groynes have halted erosion as a substantial beach accumulated between the two groynes
7
Q
Describe how Coastal Erosion has effected Mappleton
A
- Further south, the rate of erosion has increased significantly, because of material which is being carried south is not being replaced as it is trapped between the groynes
8
Q
Have the cliffs been protected?
A
- No, as there is no beach to protect them.
- Even during a heap tide, the sea reaches the base of the soft cliffs and erosion occurs
