Mindware Flashcards
Mindware
a cartoon framework for remembering the different processes and function of cognition
8 mindware components
- attention
- perception
- working memory
- long term memory
- emotional system
- willpower
- habit factors
- social radar
attention/ attentional spotlight
allocates mental resources - how much energy/focus you want to put
example of attention
fly sticker in urinal in Schiphol airport
ball being passed around - not noticing gorilla
strength of attention
very powerful when focused, process a lot of info in line of focus
weaknesses of attention
may miss information due to being too narrow or focus on the wrong info (distractible)
weakens as it divides
cannot focus on multiple things
effortful to control
Perception/perceptual filter
filters sensory input and construct meaning
constructed based on prior experience, knowledge, current state
example of perception
the necker cube
the dress –> balck & blue or white & gold
strengths of perception
rich sensory experience
linked to emotions/memories
weaknesses of perception
too much input reduces selectively
subjective - depends on experience, etc..
Working memory/white board
where thinking happens in the moment
example of working memory
letter span task
simple math problems
strengths of working memory
where thinking happens
use more effectively with strategies
weaknesses of working memory
limited: 2 sec, 5+2 chunks
over-rely on it, leads to low quality thinking
Long term memory(hard drive)
storage of knowledge - the basis of our experience
