Milieu therapy
Scientific structuring of the environment to effect behavioral changes and improve the psychological health and functioning of the client. It’s supportive and safe and provides the least amount of stress.
Explain the goal of therapeutic community/milieu therapy.
To learn adaptive coping and develop relationship skills that can be generalized to other aspects of their life.
Identify seven basic assumptions of a therapeutic community.
HINT: Skinners 7 basic assumptions
1) The health in each individual is to be realized & encouraged to grow.
2) Every interaction is an opportunity for therapeutic interventions.
3) Each client owns their own environment.
4) Each client owns their own behavior.
5) Peer pressure is a useful & powerful tool.
6) Inappropriate behaviors are dealt with as they occur.
7) Restrictions & punishment are to be avoided.
Discuss conditions that characterize a therapeutic community.
Basic physiological needs are fulfilled, physical facilities are conductive to achievement of the goal of therapy, democratic form of self-government exist, responsibilities are assigned according to client capabilities, structured program of social & work related activities is scheduled as part of the treatment program, community and family are included in program of therapy to facilitate discharge from treatment.
Identify the various therapies that may be included in the program of the therapeutic community
community meetings, individual therapy, group therapy, psycho educational groups, recreational activities, unstructured, flexible times.
Identify the healthcare workers that make up the interdisciplinary treatment team.
Occupational therapists, recreational therapists, social workers and mental health technician.
Describe the role of the nurse in establishing and maintaining a therapeutic milieu.
Establish a foundation for trust and maintaining therapeutic milieu by orienting the new client to the environment; to their rights and responsibilities within the unit milieu, structured activities designed for personal growth, and any limits or restrictions necessary to maintain safety.
