Lurasidone (2nd gen) (atypical)
SE: NMS, suicidal thoughts, seizures, drowsiness
PT edu: avoid driving/ other motor activities d/t drowsiness
Indication: depressive episode BPD I
CI: QT prolongation, recent MI
Precaution/ monitor: blood sugar, liver; kidney levels, ECG
Typical (1st gen) (3)
-chloprazomine (Thorazine)
-haloperidol (Haldol)
-fluphenazine (prolixin)
What does atypical antipsychotics focus on?
Block specific serotonin receptors
Atypical ADR and SE
-eps: affects muscles; tremors
-muscle spasm: dystopia
-akathesia: restlessness
-tardive dyskenia: smacking lips; sticking out tongue
Ziprasidone (atypical)
ADR: Qt prolongation/ tornadoes de pointes
NI/ monitor: cardiac monitoring
Ziprasidone (atypical) SE & pt EDU
SE: c/d/n, nms, sjs
PT edu: do not stop abruptly, notify hcp for LOC, dizziness, palpitations, sexual dysfunction, and menstrual abruption
