Q

How did the procedure of Milgram’s study change when the location changed?

A

The experiment took place in a rundown building, in the downtown shopping district of Bridgeport. Therefore, with a disreputable setting (eg, broken windows) the professionalism was reduced and consequently the legitimacy diminished.

Q

How did the procedure of Milgram’s study change when the proximity between the participant and the experimenter was increased?

A

The experimenter gave instructions to shock the students and increase the voltage each time they identified the wrong word pair over the phone. Participants lied on the phone saying they were raising the shock level when they weren’t and often repeatedly administering the lowest shock on the machine. Participants found it easier to resist authority without their physical presence. However, defiant participants became obedient once the researcher had entered the room again.
