what were the 2 aims?

what was the method
40 males aged 20-50
self selected sample via newspaper
yale uni
1st person they met was experimentor - mr wallace - grey lab coat
told experiment was about learning and memory
stooge said he had heart defect but were told shocks were harmless
rps given small shocks of 45v
experimentor and rps go into different room and administer shocks when stooge makes mistake
shocks go up in 15v
at 150v stooge complains
at 300v refuses to answer
at 330v stooge screams
330-450v silence
if rps protested experimentor said “ experiment requires you to continue”
what were the findings?
62.5% shocked all the way up to 450v
100% went to 300v
when giving shocks they were psychically agitated
what were the ethical issues with milgrams study?
were not given right to withdraw
inducement to take part - were not paid upon arrival so rps thought they would be paid at end so felt pressures to continue
deception - stooges used
psychological harm - he didnt realise people would have such phsyical and psychological affects
what are the methodological issues?
androcentic cant be applied to women oan and holland said they may have guessed what experiment was about due to nature historical bias - true then but not now cultural bias - all american meels and rajiimakers = spain = 92% killham and mann = australia = 27%
