Milgram Flashcards
Why did Milgram carry out his research?
He was an American of Jewish-German descent and had many family members in Europe who lost their lives due to the holocaust.
What was the aim of Milgrams study?
To see if the Nazi soldiers were ‘different’ during the holocaust for carrying out the atrocities ordered of them.
What was the sample of Milgram?
Androcentric, 40 USA males between ages of 20-50, volunteer samples from a newspaper, paid £4.50 for a memory study.
What was the method of Milgram?
Participant and confederate take part in rigged draw where ppt is teacher and Mr Wallace is learner.
Participant given 45v shock to think it was real whilst wiring up confederate.
Put in separate room and shocked learner in 15v increments for every wrong answer given to memory test.
Bang from confederate at 300v and prodded 4 times if stopped shocking.
What was the results of Milgram?
100% reached 300v.
65% reached 450v.
All participants showed signs of anxiousness-> sweating, trembling, digging nails into skin, 3 uncontrollable seizures.
What is the differences in the method for variation 7?
Experimenter leaves after giving instructions and leaving telephone , any queries from the participant are answered by phone call and prods are given through the phone.
What were the results for variation 7?
Obedience dropped to 22.5%.
Some participants lied about increasing the voltage.
What is the differences in the method for variation 10?
Took place in a sparsely furnished run down office block, rather than yale university.
What were the results for variation 10?
Obedience fell to 48%
What is the differences in the method for variation 13?
Experimenter leaves due to fake phone call and uses a confederate to record results, they recommend increasing the voltage and if participant refuses they take over.
What were the results for variation 13?
Obedience fell to 20% and five participants physically restrained the learner.
What was variation 8?
Sample of full females rather than males.
Gained the same result but females showed more signs of anxiousness.
What was the conclusion of Milgrams study?
Obedience is due to more situational factors.
