Q

Procedure

A

-Took 40 males
- Put them in a room with a ‘teacher’ and asked an actor in another room questions
- if the actor got the question wrong the participant gave them a shock, with each wrong question the shock increased. from 15V- 445V
-the actor(learner) would give the wrong answer on purpose to see if the participant would administer the shock
- if the Participant refused to administer the shock the researcher would use 4 prompts to get then to continue
0 the experiment would continue until the maximum shock had been administered or the participant quits.

Q

Evaluation points

Negative

A
  • They knew it was an experiment, it took place at Yale University so they could have had experiment effects
  • The participants were payed to take part so they might have kept going not to let the experimenter down

Q

Stimulation Factors (Proximity)

A

-Depending on where someone in power is placed will depend on the reaction from the participant.
- When the original study was taking place the experimenter was in the same room this lead to the obedience being highest, this was changed in further studies and the further away the obedience level dropped (20% when it was over the phone)
-The participants also didn’t obey correctly when it was done over further proximity

Q

Stimulation Factors (Location)

A

-In Milgrams original study it took place at Yale University, and in another version of his study he changed it to take place at am abandon building
-This change lead to the obedience to drop to 47.5% which is still a lot but a significant drop from the original 65%

Q

Simulation Factors (uniform)

A
  • in the original study the researcher was wearing a grey lab coat as a symbol of authority
-In a redo of the study the person in the position of authority needed to leave and was replaced with a random member of the public (an actor in their own clothes) this lead to the the obedience to drop to the lowest (20%)
