Conformity and types of conformity Flashcards
Conformity
A change in a persons behavior or opinion as a result of real or imagined pressure from a person or group of people
Aronson 2011
Types of conformity
There are three ways which people conform to opinions of a majority.
Compliance
Internalisation
Identifcation
Kelman 1958
internalisation
Accepts the groups opinions publicly and privately.
These changes tend to be permanent as they have been internalised, and will persist even in the absence of a group member.
Identification
We conform to the opinion when we are with the group as we want to be apart of it, yet we disagree in private.
Compliance
this conformity is ‘going along with others’ in public but not privately changing your opinions or behavior. This results in superficial change.
Social Influence
the majority effect on the minority human behavior.
Informational Social Influence
conforming to be correct or accurate.
Normative Social Influence
conforming to be liked.
