What is migration?
● Migration is the movement of people from one place to another
● At a global scale, uneven development can lead to unequal flows of people
between places as people in LICs migrate to NEEs or HICs for a better quality of
life, better opportunities or to escape war or persecution
● Migration can also occur within a country as people move to regions with
greater economic opportunities
Why do people migrate?
● People migrate due to a number of push and pull factors
● Push factors are things that push you away from an area
● Pull factors are things that pull you to an area
Push factor examples?
● Poor quality education ● Few educational facilities ● High unemployment rate ● High crime rate ● Poor environmental quality with poor air quality and little open space
Pull factor examples?
● High quality education with lots of good quality schools and universities
● Lots of jobs which are well paid
● Low crime rate
● Safe area
● Good environmental quality with lots of open space
Impacts of migration on the UK?
