Q

Fossil fuels?

A
  • Coal, oil and gas make up the three fossil fuels used today in the UK
  • These sources are classed as non-renewables as they will eventually run out as they were formed over many thousands of years and take so long to replace
  • When burnt, fossil fuels release carbon dioxide along with other greenhouse gasses
  • Fossil fuels can be burnt directly to produce heat; however, they can also be used to generate electricity in power stations and to power vehicles and machinery

Q

Nuclear energy?

A
  • Nuclear energy uses uranium to produce heat in a nuclear reactor
  • This heat is then used to drive a turbine to make electricity
  • It is not a fossil fuel, but is considered non-renewable as the supplies of uranium are infinite

Q

Renewable energy?

A

-Renewable sources of energy are sources that can be used again and again and
will not run out
-These include sun, wind, waves, tides, running water in rivers and geothermal
energy created deep underground
-The main problems with these energy sources are the cost of technology and the relatively small amounts of energy produced, however they are seen as clean and non-polluting
