ENERGY Flashcards
1
Q
How is the demand for energy changing in the UK?
A
-Energy is important in everything that we do. It powers cars and other transport methods; it heats our homes, school and o
2
Q
What is the UK’s energy mix?

Q
Fossil fuels?
A
- Coal, oil and gas make up the three fossil fuels used today in the UK
- These sources are classed as non-renewables as they will eventually run out as they were formed over many thousands of years and take so long to replace
- When burnt, fossil fuels release carbon dioxide along with other greenhouse gasses
- Fossil fuels can be burnt directly to produce heat; however, they can also be used to generate electricity in power stations and to power vehicles and machinery
4
Q
Nuclear energy?
A
- Nuclear energy uses uranium to produce heat in a nuclear reactor
- This heat is then used to drive a turbine to make electricity
- It is not a fossil fuel, but is considered non-renewable as the supplies of uranium are infinite
5
Q
Renewable energy?
A
-Renewable sources of energy are sources that can be used again and again and
will not run out
-These include sun, wind, waves, tides, running water in rivers and geothermal
energy created deep underground
-The main problems with these energy sources are the cost of technology and the relatively small amounts of energy produced, however they are seen as clean and non-polluting
