GLOBAL ATMOSPHERIC CIRCULATION AND GLOBAL BIOMES Flashcards
What is global atmosphere if circulation?
● Global atmospheric circulation is the worldwide system of winds which helps to explain the location of all world climate zones
● Air circulates between high and low pressure belts as surface winds. Winds are large scale movements of air caused by di
How does global atmospheric circulation work?
- At the equator, the sun warms the Earth which transfers heat to the air above causing it to rise. This creates a low-pressure belt with rising air, clouds and rain
- As the air rises it cools and moves out to 30 degrees north and south of the equator
- 30 degrees north and south of the equator the cool air sinks, creating a high-pressure belt with cloudless skies and very low rainfall
- The cool air reaches the ground surface and moves as surface winds either back to the equator or towards the poles
- 60degreesnorthandsouthoftheequatorthewarmersurfacewindsmeetcolder air from the poles. The warmer air is less dense than the cold air so it rises, creating low pressure
- Some of the air moves back towards the equator, and the rest moves towards the poles
- At the poles the cool air sinks creating high pressure. The high-pressure air is drawn back towards the equator as surface winds
How are global biomes distributed?
Biomes are determined primarily by 1) temperature and 2) precipitation.
Thus, they are distributed throughout the planet in a somewhat predictable way,
Proximity to the equator, currents, the geography of the land, and more factors all influence the amount of precipitation an area receives.
Why are global biomes distributed?
The distribution of large-scale ecosystems (biomes ) is determined by climate. Latitude, air pressure and winds are important factors that determine the climate of a place.
Characteristics of major global biomes?
Temperature and precipitation, and variations in both, are key abiotic factors that shape the composition of animal and plant communities in terrestrial biomes.
Some biomes, such as temperate grasslands and temperate forests, have distinct seasons, with cold weather and hot weather alternating throughout the year.
