Migration Flashcards
What factors led to the Rural Exodus?
Scarcity for arable land due to high birth rates.
Struggle to compete with Ontario and West Canada.
Mechanization
What three choices were many faced with during the Rural Exodus?
Move to the city to find work in the new factories.
Emigrate to the United States, where there were more job opportunities.
Move into the unsettled regions of Quebec.
What states made up New England?
Maine, Vermont, New York, New Hampshire.
Why was New England so attractive to potential emmigrants?
many factories had been built, mostly of textiles.
There was an abundance of jobs in the US, and the wages were higher.
What steps did the Catholic Church take to try and disaude the Quebecois from emigrating?
the Catholic clergy along with the Quebec government encouraged its citizens to settle the uncolonised regions of Quebec rather than leaving it entirely.
How successful were the efforts of the Church regarding the Rural Exodus and why?
These efforts were not very successful. Land was often of poor make, and the climate was too harsh for their crops. Moreover, farmers were unable to actually sell their products due to a lack of communication channels between these remote areas and any hubs. To get by, settlers worked for logging companies during the winter months, creating the agro-forestry industry.
