What was the context behind the Métis Rebellions?

A

After purchasing the Northwest-Territories from the Hudson’s Bay company, the Canadian government divided the Red River area into townships for white colonists to settle without consulting the 10, 000 some Métis people living in that area.
Due to this injustice, the Métis people rallied under Louis Riel to fight back against the government in December of 1859.

A

Canadian parliament relented and passed the Manitoba Act, which created Manitoba and recognised the Métis people’s title to the land, as well as their rights to a bilingual provincial parliament and stated that their language and religion would be respected in Manitoban schools.
