relay migration
different stages of a families life cycle, different people take responsibility to migrate for financial reasons
chain migration
1 person in a group migrates (age 15-25) and feedbacks to the origin money and information, causing others to make the same migration
stepped migration
when people move up the settlement hierarchy in stages - originally heads for a smaller more familiar settlement, and after more steps end up higher up settlement hierarchy
conurbation
the joining of urban areas
migration
the movement of people from 1 area to another with the intention of settling for more then a year
counter stream
a reverse stream in the other direction with lower numbers
net migration
in migration - out migration
impelled migration
migration due to the migrant’s view that they are under perceived threat
intervening obstacles
things that get in the way of migration (eg. money, boarder control, physical boarders)
pull factors
perceived things that attract you to a certain place
push factors
experienced factors that repel you from the place you live
positive adjustments
when people leave villages, causing remaining people’s incomes to rise - remittances sent back - can limit migration as people don’t need to migrate due to improved conditions at origin
negative adjustments
people loose contact with family members due to migration, break down of relationships
assimilation
beyond integration, when migrants become part of the people/place they have migrated to, absorbed into its culture and loose their own cultural identity
intergration
live in another culture but retain culture and identity
