- migraine with aura
- migraine without aura
- silent migraine
- with aura but no headache
- hemiplegic migraine

A
- usually lasts 4-72hrs
- moderate - severe intensity
- throbbing, pounding
- usually unilateral but can also be bilateral
- photophobia
- phonophobia
- N&V

what is aura and how would it present?
A
aura are the visual changes associated with migraine
- blurred vision
- lines across vision
- sparks in vision
etc

how does hemiplegic migraine present?
A
mimics a stroke- be careful, must rule out right away
Typical headache symptoms +
- hemiplegia
- ataxia
- altered consciousness

what is hemiplegia?
A
unilateral loss of weakness of the limbs

what are some common triggers for migraine?
A
- menstruation
- stress
- strong smells
- dehydration
- certain food etc

outline the 5 stages of migraine
A
- prodromal stage - up to 3 days before
- aura - 60 mins before
- headache
- resolution- when headache starts to fade
- postdromal stage
nb. not everyone will experience these 5 stages, varies widely

A
- paracetamol
- NSAIDs
- triptan
- 50mg Sumatriptan as migraine starts

actions of triptans?
A
- vasoconstriction in arteries
- reduce neuronal CNS activity
- act on peripheral pain receptors to inhibit their activation

prophylactic mx (drug and non-drug)
A
Drug:
- Propanalol
- Amitryptiline
- Topiramate
Non-drug:
- acupuncture
- vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)- may reduce frequency and severity

what is reccomended for pts with migraine associated with menstruation?
A
- NSAIDs - mefenamic acid
- Triptans
as preventative management during menstruation
