Cultural Anthropology
One of the four sub disciples of Anthropology that focuses on similarities and differences among societies.
-Study contemporary number societies and cultures.
-Describe, interpret, and explain social and cultural differences.
Are human emotions universal or culturally specific?
Archaeology
-One of the four sub disciples of Anthropology that focuses on the material from the past.
-Study of people from the past by analyzing the material culture they left behind.
Ex: Tools, Food, pottery, art, subjects, seeds, and other objects left behind by people.
What types of interactions did prehistoric people have with their neighbors?
Culture
transmitted, symbolic, interconnected changes.
Everything people have, everything people think, everything people do.
Biological Anthropology
Study of people from a biological perspective.
-the study of human origin, evolution, and variation
What did our ancestors look like?
Historical Archeology
-Study of recent societies using material remains to complement that written record.
Prehistoric Archeology
-Recover and analyze material to construct lifeways of past societies that lacked writing.
How did people in a particular area live?
Physical Anthropology
- An area of research that dates far back to the 18th century. Primarily focused on physical variation among humans.
Linguistics
Focuses on the relationship between language, thought, and culture.
-Studies language structure, evolution, variation in time and space including the interrelations between language and culture.
-Saphir-Whorf Hypothesis
-Ask questions like How did language first emerge?
Holism
-The idea that parts of system interconnect and interact to make up the whole.
-A distinguishing factor to Anthropology, holistic approach to the study of the whole human connection.
Scientific Method
- Observations->Hypothesis->Predictions->Test->Hypothesis Supported or rejected
-“Take chances, make mistakes, get messy”.
Knowledge
A unified way of knowing that is shared and used to explain and predict phenomena.
Belief
Firmly held opinion or conviction usually based on spiritual apprehension rather than empirical proof.
