English logic/defense for taxing colonies
England argued that colonists benefited from the military defense they provided as evident from the French and Indian War. Colonists should pay taxes to help pay for some of the cost.
Colonial responses to taxes imposed by English Parliament
Responses ranged from peaceful to violent
Peaceful-petitions to parliament, letters to King, boycotts, speeches
violent-Boston Tea Party (threw tea to be taxed into the water in Boston), Tar and feathering (abuse) of tax collectors
Intolerable Acts
Name given by Colonists to the laws passed by England in response to the Boston Tea Party. The laws 1. Shut down Boston Harbor until money was paid for damaged tea, 2. Colonists had to feed and house redcoats (British soldiers), 3. No town meetings without permissions, 4. British officials stand trial in Canada or England
George Washington
Future first president of the United States. During the Revolutionary War, he was chosen by the Continental Congress to lead the Continental Army

Terms used to describe colonists who supported the idea of declaring independence and fighting England

Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence
Declaration of Independence
This document speaks of God-given rights men are born with, the role government plays protecting those rights and lists many ways England violated those rights
Purpose of the Declaration of Independence
To formally inform England, King George III and the rest of the world that the 13 colonies were no longer politically connected to England
Saratoga
Turning point battle in the American Revolution in NYS. Patriots won, which led France to become a military ally to their conflict with England. Victory at Saratoga also blew up recoat strategy to isolate New England colonies from middle and Southern colonies and focus attacks on New England
Valley Forge
Location in Pennsylvania where Continental Army was at their low point. Disease, starvation, frostbite desertion and death were widespread. The fight for independence appears doomed to fail.
