Midterm: OAT Neck Pain Flashcards
Weakness of the attachment point of a tendon to bone is defined as?
Enthesopathy
What is a classic example of enthesopathy?
Plantar fasciitis
-creates a reflexive tension within the muscle
What causes regional instability of the neck joints?
Ligament laxity
-causes chronic muscle tension which can further create tension
Which cause of neck pain can be treated with OMT?
Somatic dysfunction
-bursitis, joint laxity, enthesopathy cannot
What can cause injuries to the supraspinous and interspinous ligaments?
Slouching, lifting, MVA**
If a neck pain is exacerbated by movement, what are the two causes?
- Mechanical: strains
2. Facet: arthritis or injury
If a pain in the neck gets better with postural changes, what is the cause of the pain?
Upper crossed syndromes
If the neck pain is associated with numbness/tingling on one side, what should you think?
N. impingement
-radicular, scalene, pec minor
Where does upper trap refer pain to? What about lower trap?
Sub occipital area. Lower trap is shoulder
If a patient has referred pain to around eye and eyebrow, what muscle?
Sternocleidomastoid
Where do scalenes refer pain to?
Tricep, delt, bicep
When would you consider that the pain is due to the Somatic Dysfunction?
If cervical motion is Type II Like or if the location of symptoms and TART align
If a patient has C3F SLRR and C4ERLSR, would you consider that pain over C3 and C4 could be from somatic dysfunciton?
Yes. cervical motion should be in the same direction, and you have a Flexion right next to an Extension
Is a somatic dysfunction often the main cause for a patients pain?
No, it usually is caused by a biomechanical or neurologic problem. So OMT is used as adjunctive therapy
