Midterm: Compression Neuropathies Flashcards
1st degre nerve injury that involves just focal damage of myelin fibers around the axon?
Neuropraxia
2nd degree nerve damage that involves disruption of the axon, but the myelin sheath remains intact?
Axonotmesis
3-5th degree nerve injury that involves disruption of the axon and the myelin sheath is damaged.
Neurotmesis
-surgery is required for 5th degree
What nerve root is the motor for the deltoid and bicep, and lateral sensation of upper arm?
C5
-biceps reflex
What nerve root: Wrist extension and elbow flexion, radial forearm and thumb and index finger?
C6
-brachioradialis reflex
What nerve root :Wrist flexion, elbow extension, and finger extension with sensation to the middle finger
C7
-Triceps reflex
What nerve root: Finger flexion and sensation to medial forearm and pinky
C8
What nerve root: Finger abduction with sensation to medial arm
T1
This injury is due to the disc rupturing posterior-laterally causing compression of the nerve root causing radicular pain
Cervical nerve root compression due to bulging/herniated disc
What tests can you use to identify cervical root compression?
Spurlings
-hurts when neck is toward side of pain
How can you identify TOS?
Adsons test
How can you identify cervical myelopathy?
Hoffmann’s test
-grab middle finger and flex it quickly down
+if thumb and finger flex (same meaning as babinski, you have UMN issue)
If you lose motor action of triceps, anconeus and wrist extensors with sensation lost to the dorsum of the hand what nerve is injured?
Radial N
Where is the injury to the radial n when you have wrist drop, elbow flexion weakness, numbness/pain?
High on the humerus
What type of radial n damage can be done with repetitve rotatory movements (manual labor, sports)?
Radial tunnel
-pain will be 5 cm distal to lateral epicondyle
