Legitimacy
A value whereby people accept something or someone as right and proper. Widely accepted by public.
What are the 3 forms of political legitimacy ?
- Tradition
- Charismatic
- Rational-legal
Traditional legitimacy
Something is the way it is because it has always been that way. An institution based on continuity.
Example of a traditionally legitimate institution?
A long standing monarch with the same family ruling for many generations
Charismatic legitimacy
Someone who wields power because of how they present things and who they are. Not institutionalized.
Rational-legal legitimacy
Comes with institutionalized rules. People accept things because everyone is following the same rules. Taking office losing authority when you leave office.
Where is the power in rational legal legitimacy?
With the set of rules not the individuals
Federalism
Power is divided (like states in us) emphasis on local needs and keeping centralized power contained.
Federalism aspects
Territories have some rule over themselves such as taxation lawmaking and security.
Asymmetric federalism
Power is decided unevenly between regions
