Midterm Flashcards
What happens at an atomic/molecular level when….
- Water freezes to form ice
- copper and tin combine to form bronze
- rainwater evaporates from the pavement
- low temp causes atoms to slow and get closer together
- metallic bond(sharing electrons)
- high temp causes atoms to move far apart and fast enough to change state and break surface tension
How are nuclear symbols set up?
Mass
Element
Protons
What colors go with what ions?
Purple, blue/green, green/violet, faint pink/violet, green, yellow/green, blue, pink
Purple: Ti Blue/Green: Cu Green/Violet: Vanadium Faint pink/violet: manganese Green: Nickel Yellow/green: Fe Blue: Vanadium Pink: Co
When naming, which bonds do you need roman numerals? which bonds do you need to keep track of charges?
ionic
How are prefixes with ionic and covalent bonds different?
All words have prefixes with covalent bonds, the first ones dont with ionic bonds
How different strength acids/bases translate into electrolytes?
Strong acids or bases, ionic substances=strong electrolytes
Covalent=nonelectrolyte
Weak acid/base= weak electrolyte
How do you tell if something is oxidized or reduced?
Gain electrons: reduced
Lose electrons: Oxidized
How do you tell if a reaction is redox?
Something gets oxidized AND something gets reduced
How do you tell which molecules have higher melting points?
More mass=higher melting point
What are the strong acids?
- HI
- HBr
- HClO4
- HCl
- HClO3
- H2SO4
- HNO3
What are the strong bases?
- NaOH
- KOH
