Midt - Lec. 14 Butt/thigh Flashcards
What are the muscles of the Superficial Gluteal region?
- Gluteus maximus
- Gluteus medius
- Gluteus minimus
- Tensor fasciae latae
What are the muscles of the Deep Gluteal region?
- Piriformis
- Obturator internus
- Obturator externus (anterior view)
- Superior gemellus
- Inferior gemellus
- Quadratus femoris
Iliotibial tract (band)
- Thickened portion of the deep fascia of the thigh
- lateral side of thigh running from knee to hip
What muscles are in the Anterior compartment of the Thigh
- iliopsoas (psoas major & iliacus)
- sartorious
- rectus femoris
- vastus lateralis
- vastus medialis
- vastus intermedius
What muscles are in the Posterior (“hamstrings”) compartment of the Thigh
- Biceps femoris
- semimembranosus
- semitendinosus
What muscles are in the Medial compartment of the Thigh
- pectineus
- adductor longus
- adductor brevis
- adductor Magnus
- gracilis
What muscles make up the Quadriceps femoris
Rectus femoris
Vastus lateralis
Vastus medialis
Vastus intermedius
- all attach to the tibial tuberosity via the patellar ligament (tendon)
- all 4 extend the knee
What muscles attach to the pes anserinus
“Say Grace before Tea”
- Sartorius
- Gracilis
- semiTendinosus
Attachments & Actions of Gluteus Maximus
Attach:
- most fibres attach distally to the IT Band
- some fibres attach distally to the gluteal tuberosity of femur
Action:
- extends hip, laterally rotates hip
Attachments & Actions of Gluteus Medius
Attach:
- between the posterior and anterior gluteal lines
- lateral surface or the greater trochanter
Action:
- abducts hip, medially rotates hip
Attachments & Actions of Gluteus Minimus
Attach:
- O: between anterior and inferior gluteal line
I: lateral surface of the greater trochanter
Action:
- abducts hip, medially rotates hip
Attachments & Actions of Tensor Fasciae Latae (TFL)
Attach:
- fibres attach distally to the iliotibial tract
- anterior portion of the iliac crest
Action:
- flexes hip, abducts hip, medially rotates hip
Attachments & Actions of Piriformis
Attach: - medial attachment inside the pelvic girdle on the anterior surface of the sacrum - greater trochanter Action: - laterally rotates hip
Attachments & Actions of Obturator Internus
Attach: - medial attachment inside the pelvic girdle around the obturator foramen - greater trochanter Action: - laterally rotates hip
Attachments & Actions of Obturator externus
Attach: - around the obturator foramen on the outside of the pelvic girdle. - greater trochanter Action: - laterally rotates hip
Attachments & Actions of Superior Gemellus
Attach: - ischial spine - greater trochanter Action: - laterally rotates hip
Attachments & Actions of Inferior Gemellus
Attach: - ischial tuberosity - greater trochanter Action: - laterally rotates hip
Attachments & Actions of Quadratus Femoris
Attach: - ischial tuberosity - intertrochanteric crest Action: - laterally rotates hip
Main actions & attachments of the Anterior muscles of the Thigh
- Hip flexion / knee extension
- ilium and femur
Main actions & attachments of the Posterior (hamstring) muscles of the Thigh
- Hip extension / knee flexion
- ischial tuberosity
Main actions & attachments of the Medial muscles of the Thigh
- Hip adduction and hip flexion
- pubis
Main attachments for superficial gluteal muscles
- ilium
Main attachments for deep gluteal muscles
Ischium and pubis
