Lec. 10 Muscle Tissue Flashcards
What are the 3 types of muscle tissue
Skeletal, cardiac, smooth
What are the characteristics of skeletal muscle
- attached to bones
- striated
- mainly voluntary control
What are the characteristics of cardiac muscles
- wall of the heart
- striated
- involuntary control
What are the characteristics of smooth muscle
- Walls of hollow internal structures
- not striated
- involuntary control
Tendon’s relationship with skeletal muscle
Band of dense connective tissue that attaches a skeletal muscle to a bone.
What is fascia
Dense sheet of connective tissue that lines the body wall
- supports skeletal muscles and organs
Functions of skeletal muscles
- movement
- stabilize body position/ posture
- generate heat
Functions of cardiac muscle
- move substances within body
Pump blood through circulatory system
Functions of smooth muscle
- helps regulate distribution of blood to different regions of body
What is a muscles origin?
The attachment that does NOT move (proximal attachment)
What is a muscles insertion?
Attachment that moves (distal attachment)
What is a muscles belly?
Fleshy portion of the muscle in the middle
What is the outermost layer of tissue surrounding the entire muscle
Epimysium
What is the middle layer surrounding bundles of muscle fibres
Perimysium
What is the innermost layer surrounding individual muscle fibres
Endomysium
