MIDDLE MEDIASTINUM Flashcards
Mediastinum
central compartment between lungs containing all other structures of thorax
Mediastinum is divided into:
Superior and Inferior (anterior/middle/posterior)
Pericardium
CT covering of heart
Components of Pericardium
- Fibrous pericardium
- Serous pericardium (visceral and parietal)
Fibrous Pericardium
tough (dense) outermost layer of CT completely surrounding the heart
Prevents heart from expanding too much
Fibrous Pericardium
Serous Pericardium
layer of serosa lining
Visceral layer of serous pericardium
inner layer (at root of heart), intimately associated with heart tissue, covers heart
Parietal layer of serous pericardium
outer layer, lines fibrous pericardium, intimately associated with visceral
Pericardial Cavity
space between the visceral and parietal layers of serous pericardium
Pericardial Cavity contains…
pericardial fluid and 2 sinuses (oblique and transverse)
allows for friction-free movement of heart
Pericardial Fluid
Oblique Sinus
portion of pericardial cavity behind the heart (posterior portion pericardial sac)
Transverse Sinus
portion of pericardial cavity behind (posterior to) aorta and pulmonary artery
Arterial supply of pericardium
Fibrous/Parietal (branches from Internal Thoracic and Aorta) & Visceral Layer (off of coronary arteries)
