What is Feudalism
A government system in which local lords had a fief with serfs to work the land.
Lords were vassals for the King. → which means if the country goes to war, the lord and its serfs would fight.
Who were peasants
Serfs who worked on the manor.
The Role of God in the Middle Ages
-God gave the pope’s Papal Supremacy which means God gave the pope the right to rule.
-people accepted their hard lives as God’s will.
The Role of the Church in the Middle Ages
-The Catholic Church had much power in the Middle Ages
-healed sick
-controlled schools
-Church was a social outlet
-owned a lot of land
Church punishment
-The Inquisition→ a court in which people would be brought forward in accusation of heresy against the catholic church
-punishment→ If they didn’t confess, they were whipped and sent to prison or burned at the stake.
The Crusades
-1093→ Pope Urban II issued a “Holy war” to gain control over the holy land. (Jerusalem)
-went to get the land AND recover riches
-crusaders→ knights but mostly poor peasants
-THERE WERE 12 CRUSADES.
Parliament
-in 1295, parliament was established which was a group of representatives of the nobles, kings and clergy that would meet and debate taxes
The Magna Carta
-Signed by the King of England → King John bc he was cruel to his subjects.
-guaranteed nobles basic political rights like no taxation w/o representation, jury trials, and protection under the law.
- eventually, it was applied to every citizen
Fief
A land awarded to a lord that their serfs worked on.
