Conditions in France, pre-Revolution
Louis spent all of the money on his lifestyle and not on improving the country. People were hungry and unhappy with the government.
Louis XVI
He inherited the throne in France during religious fighting, which he vowed to put an end to. Asserts the divine right to rule as a monarch. The sun is his symbol. He never called meetings because he did everything. He ordered France to pursue colonization & exploration to make $$. Was seen as a weak leader after spending a lot of $$. Escaped France by himself but was caught.
Marie Antoinette
Along with Louis XVI ruled over England. They signed the Bill of Rights, which limits their power of monarchy. Tried to escape France with Louis XVI, but was caught. Was executed in 1793.
National Assembly
French people who wanted to take away privileges of the first and second estates(made them pay taxes). Peasants started not to like them after they took away land and power from the church.

Napoleon – background & rise to power
Napoleon rose within the army with his many victories against the British and Austrians. With his military supporters, he overthrew the post-revolutionary government and shared power with two other people. He then named himself consul for life.
