Middle Adulthood Flashcards
What is Menopause?
Women are most fertile in their late teens and early twenties. The risk of miscarriage and pregnancy complications rises with age.
Between the age of 45-55 years of age fertility reduces and then comes to an end in a process called menopause, which takes several years to complete.
What does menopause involve?
Gradual ending of menstruation and a large reduction of fertile eggs in the ovaries Reduction in sex hormones (oestrogen and progesterone) produced in a woman’s ovaries, resulting in shrinkage of sexual organs and reduction in sexual interest.
Increase in hormones called gonadotropins that try stimulating egg production, resulting in irritability, hot flushes, and night sweats Problems such as osteoporosis caused by a reduction in the production of sex hormones
