Ovaries begin to release eggs
Menstrual cycle begins
What are the secondary sexual characteristics for women?
Breasts develop and areola (area around nipples) swells and darkens
Pubic hair in arms and pubic area
Redistribution of body fat (wider hips)
What are primary sexual characteristics for men?
Enlargement of penis and testes
Spontaneous erections caused by blood flowing into the penis
Testicles begin to produce spermatozoa, beginning of ejaculation
What are secondary sexual characteristics for men?
Changes in larynx/Adam’s apple, causing a deeper voice
Facial hair and hair in arms and pubic area
Redistribution of muscle tissue and fat
When does puberty start for men and women?
Women:11-13
Men: 13-15
What is puberty triggered by and what does it help the body prepare for?
Puberty is triggered by hormonal action and prepares the body for sexual reproduction
What may both genders experience?
Both genders may experience growth spurts when they grow taller at a faster rate
