Midbrain Flashcards
0
Q
Tectum
A
- part of sensory pathways to brain
- latin for “roof”
- It is responsible for auditory/visual reflexes, like jumping when someone slams a door
- consists of SUPERIOR COLLICULUS (Vision - including for Blindsight) and INFERIOR COLLICULUS (Audition)
1
Q
Midbrain
A
- central structures about Hindbrain
- includes the tectum and tegmentum
- portion of the central nervous system associated with vision, hearing, motor control, sleep/wake, arousal (alertness), and temperature regulation
- proportionally large and more important in simpler brains
2
Q
Tegmentum
A
- latin for “covering” or “rug
- Major motor pathways
- lies below Tectum
- includes RED NUCLEUS and SUBSTANTIA NIGRA w/Dopaminergic neurons that degenerate in Parkinson’s Diesease
- contains cranial nerves III and IV (controlling eye movements) - also part of Reticular Formation for arousal
3
Q
Superior Colliculus
A
Vision - including for Blindsight
4
Q
Inferior Colliculus
A
Audition
