Q
Brain Stem
A
Hindbrain (not including the Cerebellum), together with the Midbrain and Diencephalon of Forebrain are known as the BRAIN STEM
structures along the center-most section of the brain
1
Q
Hindbrain
A
- ancient, posterior part of the brain consisiting of the Medulla, Pons, and Cerebellum
2
Q
Medulla (“Medulla Oblongata”)
A
- controls breathing, heart-rate, vomiting, coughing, and other VITAL REFLEXES
- overdoses of cocaine, heroin, etc. can be fatal via pathological effects on Medulla
3
Q
Pons (latin for “bridge”)
A
- relays info between cortex and cerebellum and between brain and spinal cord
- Pons (&Medulla) also include Cranial Nerves V through XII that carry sensory /motor info to/from the head
- plus they included RETICULAR FORMATION (involved in Arousal) and the RAPHE SYSTEM (involved in sleep)
4
Q
Cerebellum (“little brain”)
A
- motor programs
- organizes online sensory input to GUIDE MOVEMENT
- modifiable by learning
- critical in TIMING ACTIONS, including graceful, coordinated activity
- also important in relevant shifting of ATTENTION
