Drug class of Versed
Benzodiazepine, schedule IV drug
Versed mechanism of action
Reversibly interacts with gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) receptors in the central nervous system causing sedative, anxiolytic, amnesic, and hypnotic effects.
Indications for Midazolam
Sedation for medical procedure (intubation, ventilated patients, cardioversion). Is often used to combat seizures
Contraindications of Versed
Acute narrow-angle glaucoma, shock, coma, alcohol intoxication, overdose, depressed vital signs. Concomitant use with barbiturates, alcohol, narcotics, or other central nervous system depressants.
Adverse effects of Midazolam
Headache, somnolence, respiratory depression, respiratory arrest, apnea, hypotension, cardiac arrest, NV, pain, at the injection site.
Precautions of Versed
Not to be taken with other CNS depressants
Adult dose of Midazolam
2 to 2.5 mg slow IVP (max 0.1mg/kg)
Pediatric dose of Versed
0.1 to 0.3 mg/kg slow IVP (max 10 mg)
