Drug class of Calcium Chloride
Electrolyte (anion)
Calcium Chloride’s mechanism of action.
Increases cardiac contractility (+inotrope). Enhances ventricular automaticity. Stabilizes cardiac myocyte cell membrane. Combats Magnesium Toxicity
Indications for Calcium Chloride.
Hypocalcemia,Hyperkalemia, Magnesium Toxicity (hypermagnesemia), Beta blocker and Calcium channel blocker overdoses
Contraindication for Calcium Chloride.
Hypercalcemia, Ventricular fibrillation, Digitalis toxicity
Adverse effects of Calcium Chloride
Syncope, cardiac arrest (asystole), dysrhythmia, bradycardia, hypotension, peripheral vasodilation, nausea & vomiting, metallic taste, tissue necrosis (injection site), coronary & cerebral artery spasm.
Precautions of Calcium Chloride
May worsen digitalis toxicity, antagonizes effects of calcium channel blockers.
What is a major no-no with Calcium Chloride
Do NOT mix with sodium Bicarbonate in the same line
Adult dose and admin of Calcium Chloride
500mg – 1000 mg IVP. May repeat as needed.
Pediatric dose and admin of Calcium Chloride
20 mg/kg slow IV/IO push maximum dose 1 gram; may repeat in 10mins
