Microwave Landing System Flashcards
MLS was designed for
To replace ILS with an advanced precision approach
How many channels in MLS
200 channels
What frequency does MLS operate in
SHF band - 5031/5090 MHZ
Advantages of MLS
200 channels
Not limited to straight in approaches
Can operate from unprepared/hilly sites
No multi path interference
Built in DME
How does MLS Work
To/From Sweeping beam - Time reference scanning beam
Difference between TO scan and FROM scan calculated and ac position can be determined
Referred to as time multiplexed
MLS Coverage
40 degrees either side of the centreline extending to 20nm
DME/P and MLS
DME/P required for segmented approaches (curved). If not installed or active only straight line approaches can be flown similar to ILS
How can a MLS be identified
4 letter Morse code at 10 second intervals
Multi mode Receiver
Enable use of multiple nav aids - ILS/MLS/GNSS
+ reduces training costs
What information is displayed to the pilot using a MLS
